Then Came Drake With Duppy At Pusha T & Kanye West

Artist: Drake
Track Name: Duppy Freestyle
AH Track Rating:

Drake hit back with Duppy… and called it a Freestyle.  Was it really a freestyle though?

I’ll be honest and say when I first heard this, I was impressed. I mean, in context, without knowing what came next, this is a pretty solid response as far as rap beef goes. So many shots fired in these bars, that, possibly were not written by Drake. I know nowadays that’s not a big deal but, it really used to be. The origins of hip hop music, included a need for originality. I would have loved to hear these bars delivered by the person who penned them.  I mean, that was the whole reason Pusha T went at the industry in the first place on Infared.

But too much of rap, now, is about marketing, and who ‘looks’ right, for big time music companies to invest in.

On Duppy, bar for bar, is hard as fuck. I mean it really is, again, without considering full context.  Because it’s hard not to take into consideration that “Duppy Freestyle” isn’t a freestyle. We all know this didn’t come off the top of the dome.  He did take shots, and basically called Pusha a fake drug dealer, along with other disses. At this point, I felt like Drake won.

However, Duppy, may just mark the end of Drake’s music career.

The response he provoked out of Pusha T, by claiming he’s not even top 5 on his Own label, was … well … we’ll get to that in a few.

Purely off Bars, and with a special mention of how I loved the ‘flip’ of a slow track … 4 lit fires. Duppy, as far as rap beef goes, will not be seen in it’s true light until possibly many years later.  The response that came, has drowned it all out….
